Balam's "Eskilerden" – which literally means "from the old ones" – brings the sounds and melodies of the past into the present. In her show, Balam presents Turkish music that her grandparents and parents used to listen to, which is still played at weddings and celebrations today, and is known from old Turkish films. Experience the tunes of well-known folk songs and "Gurbetçi" songs, written and sung by Turkish migrant workers in Germany in the 60s and 70s. These songs tell stories of a longing for home, the hardships of labor, everyday racism they faced in Germany, and the sense of uprootedness. Though these songs are old, they hold great relevance today, especially for those who are visibly migrant in Germany, offering many points of connection and identification.
